For digital nomads

The ultimate Sintra FAQ.

Thinking about visiting Sintra, but not sure how to navigate it as a nomad? Here is everything you need to know to experience this beautiful Vila like a local sintrense.

01.

I'm staying in Lisbon. How do I get to Sintra?

+
It's incredibly easy. By train: take the train from Rossio, Entrecampos, or Sete Rios station. Sintra is the final stop and it takes about 38–45 minutes. Check the schedules at cp.pt. By Uber/Bolt usually costs between €17–€25, but it can easily take longer than the train due to traffic jams.
02.

What is the summer weather like in Sintra?

+
It can be completely different from Lisbon — sometimes up to 20 degrees cooler, with thick, mystical fog. In winter, it can be quite rainy and windy. Bring a raincoat or a warm layer. This unpredictable microclimate is exactly what keeps our mountain so breathtakingly green and magical.
03.

I'm a digital nomad and know nothing about Sintra. Where do I start?

+
Start by checking our Spaces page to see our curated list for nomads in Sintra, or join one of our hosted offline experiences to get your bearings.
04.

I want to visit the coastal part of Sintra, but I'm coming by train. How do I get around?

+
Don't rely on public transport or Ubers for the coast. Public transit has limited stops, and Ubers will cost you a fortune. Instead, you can rent one of our microcars to explore the coast. Bring a friend, split the bill, and create a really cool, independent day in Sintra.
05.

I've already seen the historic town center. I'm looking for something truly authentic.

+
Check out our special experiences — like a deep forest hike or a hands-on floristry workshop with local creators. We are constantly adding new activities to the agenda.
06.

We're a group of travelers with our own transport, looking for a non-touristy day. What do you suggest?

+
Reach out for a custom curated day. We'll share our best recommendations for unique experiences hosted by our local partners — private ceramics workshops, or a cozy brunch in a less-explored spot.
07.

Are there any free activities?

+
Yes! Join Novada for free forest hikes twice a week. Check our agenda to see when we are heading out next to switch on our "soft attention" in nature.
08.

I'm not in Portugal yet, but I want to stay in Sintra for workation or in a coliving format. Can you help?

+
Absolutely. Reach out to us directly, and we will suggest some of the best accommodation options based on your needs.
09.

I live in Sintra and love what you're doing. Can I join your workshops?

+
100% yes! Locals are always welcome. We're all about connecting the international nomadic community with the local creative ecosystem.
10.

Does Novada have a fixed hub?

+
Not yet, but we are actively working on creating our Sintra Forest Hub. For now we partner with beautiful local business venues where we meet for workshops, coworking, and co-creating.
11.

We are a digital nomad family. Do you have anything cool for us?

+
Sintra is amazing for families. Reach out to us, and we will happily recommend the best local spots for family-friendly activities.

For creatives & artists

Sintra has always inspired makers.

We want to hear from creatives and connect them to Sintra's local businesses. Sintra has always been a place that inspired writers and artists, and it still is. There is so much talent and so much inspiration here.

We are building a Sintra Forest Hub with our partners where you can host your workshop. Our in-house artists list is growing and we are offering unique experiences — precious offline time, a new skill, and something with a soul.

(03) — Why Sintra

Sintra is more than a location — it is our co-author.

Its unique microclimate, biodiversity, and rich cultural heritage create the perfect environment for creative incubation. Novada transforms this legendary landscape into a functional hub where global minds don't just work — they co-create.

Just imagine taking a break from a video call to look out over the Atlantic forest, or coding with the fog rolling past a 19th-century greenhouse. Sintra has this unique way of making you feel completely disconnected from the modern world while keeping you just a short train ride away from Lisbon. It turns a regular workday into something that feels almost cinematic.

Curiosities about Sintra

Six quiet stories the fog still whispers.

  1. 01.

A summer sanctuary for high society

Sintra was once the ultimate summer sanctuary for high society, European royalty, and legendary artists. Its dramatic landscapes and romantic estates drew the elite away from the heat of nearby cities, transforming the town into a bohemian haven of wealth, prestige, and high culture.

  2. 02.

    Hans Christian Andersen's childish imagination

The famous Danish storyteller Hans Christian Andersen lived in Sintra and found himself deeply inspired by its ethereal atmosphere. He remarked that the mystical town awakened a youthful, "childish imagination" within him — a whimsical wonder that echoed through his world-renowned fairy tales.

  3. 03.

    An Edenic botanical masterpiece

Sintra resembles a massive, untamed garden, celebrated for its jaw-dropping botanical diversity. Sir Francis Cook famously amassed a breathtaking collection of exotic plant species here, transforming his estate into an Edenic wonderland that stunned visiting elites and solidified Sintra's reputation as a living botanical masterpiece.

  4. 04.

    A Hollywood gothic backdrop

Sintra's inherently mysterious and eerie aesthetic eventually caught the eye of Hollywood. Johnny Depp starred in a psychological thriller (The Ninth Gate) shot directly among the town's mist-shrouded ruins and gothic architecture, cementing its global reputation as a place of dark, cinematic intrigue.

  5. 05.

A microclimate 20°C cooler than Lisbon

One of Sintra's most fascinating traits is its intense, unpredictable microclimate. In the middle of summer, temperatures here can plummet up to 20°C lower than in Lisbon; the mountains trap moisture from the Atlantic, instantly cloaking the palaces in a thick, magical fog while the rest of the region bakes in the sun.

  6. 06.

Cabo da Roca: the edge of Europe

Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of continental Europe — and yes, it's in Sintra. Known for its dramatic scenery and powerful, sweeping winds, this towering 140-meter cliffside was the absolute last piece of European land Portuguese explorers saw on the horizon as they sailed out into the unknown Atlantic. Today, you can visit the wind-whipped top to take in the vast ocean views and even mail a postcard from the local post office, stamped from the literal edge of the continent.
